The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body, and is responsible for moving oxygen-rich blood away from your heart and lungs to the rest of the body. The aorta is a hollow tube, about the width of a hosepipe. The wall of the aorta is made up of elastic fibres that are a mixture of proteins and collagen (a tough, flexible type of protein).
