Occupational therapist

Individual who is involved in the assessment and treatment of physical and psychiatric conditions using specific, purposeful activity to prevent disability and promote independent function in all aspects of daily life.

oesophagogastroduodenoscopy

A diagnostic gastroscopy is a general term to describe a diagnosis that is made inside the upper gastrointestinal tract using a piece of equipment called an endoscope. Diagnostic gastroscopy is also known as diagnostics endoscopy of the stomach and oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGD).

Offspring risk

The chance that a genetic (inherited) disease present in an individual will recur in that person’s children.

oophorectomy

Surgical removal of an ovary or ovaries

Open angle glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye condition where the nerve at the back of the eye (the optic nerve) is damaged. This can lead to loss of vision.

ophthalmology

Studies of the normal function of the eye, enabling identification of where and how, the eye fails in disease states.

Orthopaedic

Orthopaedics is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention or correction of injuries or disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments.

Orthotist

An orthotist is a health professionals who provide a range of splints, braces and special footwear to aid movement, correct deformity and relieve discomfort.

Osteoarthritis

Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints. Osteoarthritis (or degenerative arthritis) is a chronic disease which causes the cushioning (cartilage) between the bone joints to wear away. The surface of the joint is damaged and the surrounding bone grows thicker leading to pain and stiffness.

Osteoporosis

A condition that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density, causing bones to become fragile.

Outpatient clinic

A health care facility for diagnosis or treatment that does not require an individual to be admitted overnight. Sometimes called a day patient clinic.
